Tongue Scraping
Tongue scraping is a practice for cleaning bacteria and metabolic residues from your tongue. In Ayurveda the coating of your tongue is a reflection of the health of your digestive system. A healthy tongue has a rosy pink color with a thin white film, while an unhealthy tongue has a thick white, yellow, gray, or black coating on it. Tongue scraping, in conjunction with brushing and flossing your teeth, provides a complete oral health care regime.
Tongue Scraping prevents the build up of bacteria which contributes to:
- Bad breath (halitosis)
- Tooth decay
- Gum disease
- Digestive and respiratory problems
- Decreased sensitivity of the taste buds
Instructions
Before you scrape your tongue, take a moment to inspect it. If you notice that your tongue has a thick coating, this indicates that your digestion is disturbed and it is best to eat a light, easy-to-digest vegetarian diet. Avoid heavy or difficult to digest foods such as dairy products, meats or processed foods until your coating improves. Clean the tongue by gently scraping it with a tongue scraper slowly from back to front five to ten times. Then clean and dry your tongue scraper and rinse out your mouth.
Banyan Botanicals is an excellent source for Tongue Scrapers. A Tongue Scraper is included in the Doctor Blossom/Banyan Botanicals Deluxe Cleanse Kit.
