After The Cleanse

Ayurveda always follows purification with rejuvenation. A purifying lifestyle and diet like the one prescribed here is intended to create a fresh, clear quality within our minds and bodies.

During the rejuvenation phase we have a chance to nourish and strengthen the positive changes we have initiated in our lives by carefully choosing foods and activities that will serve us most. Check out the suggestions for how to do this on the Spring Renewal home page. Generally speaking we recommend that you continue to drink the digestive tea, slowly reintroduce a wider variety of whole foods, and to continue to get enough rest. You can also continue to take triphala if you find that it helps regulate your elimination patterns. Below is a general guideline for how to add foods back into your diet during the first week of the rejuvenation phase.

Day 1: Stay with Kitchari and add in some nuts and seeds.
Day 2: Other vegetables, grains, legumes, and natural sweeteners
Day 3: Fruits
Day 4: Dairy
Day 5: Dairy and other non-vegetarian foods if appropriate
Day 6-7: Small amounts of sweets and caffeinated beverages
“Spices and Vices”: Spicy foods and fried foods, tobacco, alcohol, and recreational drugs are not recommended for at least a week after you finish your cleanse.

Thanks to all of you. It had to be a devoted team over a loong period of time to put all this together. Its wonderful and so nicely timed. Now that I have figured out how to get it all together I would like to form a group here, to do it together, providing some live support. It was such a gift.   roberta

Can I ask, is it possible to do the cleanse once again, maybe a month later? How practical would this be to do this once a month for 7 days? I am in the 4th day of my cleanse and would be interested in adding something like this into my routine, what do you think? Jade :)

Great week. The kitchari recipe made more food that I could possible eat in one day so I was able to stretch the recipe for two.  Maybe not the best idea, but it worked well for me since I have an hour + commute each way to work and back.  I’ve had abundant energy and have slept like a baby.  My painful thumb, toe, and knee have been happier this week than I remember for a while.  It will interesting to reintroduce foods to see if  they affect my joints.  I was reluctant to add the potato peeling to the broth since I avoid nightshades, so we’ll see if that is a trigger.  I can’t remember a week where I’ve spent so much time focusing on myself with such good results.  Re. the cooking – I’m not accustomed to cooking from scratch so often during the week, but have loved it.  My husband asked that we add kitchari to the weekly rotation, which I’m happy to do.  Thank you so much and am hoping that you’ll sponsor a Fall cleanse.

It is with a bit of fear that I am letting go of this cleanse and tomorrow will move into adding.  It has been a gift to me to nourish my body in such a wonderful way.  I slowed down, found my energy in balance all the time, my reactive time to stress was slowed way down and most “drama” passed me right by.  I felt in the middle of it all, watching , simply observing.  I lost a few pounds, had my  body rash subside, lovely sleep and seem to need less of it.
I ate all the time, it seems.  Loved the food but was very delighted when the day 4 or 5 suggested mint tea.  My  body is telling me I do not need dairy or coffee.  I shall be interested in what my mind tells me next week!
Thank you all for this gift.  It is well received and deeply appreciated.

I loved this cleanse,  got started a couple of days late but will continue for the full week maybe longer.  I really loved the Kitchari, my body seemed to crave it.  My sense of taste and smell have sharpened.  I feel cleaner and clearer.   Moving into stillness in meditation takes much less time.  I loved the yoga and will do more of that during my time off this weekend.  Thank you so much for putting this together.

interesting that the above list of order and timing differs from what was in the day 7 email … and the recipes said broth daily but day 6 email said to introduce it.  I drank it daily and enjoyed it.  I found th ekicheri too heavy for me – maybe because it was all I ate?  I often make and eat kicheri (mostly same recipe) so I was surprised by that.  I did better using quinoa to make it (no mung).  I liked the teas and will continue.  I really noticed too a change in my meditation – much less chatter.  My only trouble is loss of regular bowel movements – I drink  a LOT of the teas, and water, take triphala, and even with the lighter Kicheri bowels are sluggish.   I don’t know that I really cleaned anything out!  Am thinking to do shank prakshalana (the smaller 2 liter version since my energy is low).  ok?

I was curious about the discrepancies in the email and this list, too… but I feel like following the one in the email ^_^.

I find it hard to get off the cleansing diet..it seems completely satisfying…at least my modification of it.  I have a question though about  brown rice.  The directions called for basmati rice…I used brown basmati rice for the morning kanji, but  white basmati for the kitchari..were we not supposed to use brown rice of any kind??

Just want to thank all who contributed to making the Spring cleanse program what it is.  I found that after the headaches and sluggishness of the first two days passed, I felt more alert, energetic and I slept better than I have in a very long time.  My husband, although not a full participant, enjoyed the breakfast porridge as well as the Kitchari.  Again,  thank you thank you, thank you.

The order of food reintroduction is different in the day 7 email from the order given here in the after cleanse section.  Which one should I follow?

I am also very grateful for this program.  I did not adhered to it 100% , but nonetheless it had very beneficial results.  Also, although my husband did not purposely  do program with me, he found the kitchari I made a perfect nighttime meal.  I often added small amounts of diced carrots and beets, or quarter brussel sprouts and carrots and sometimes a few roasted cashews.  I was a little confused because in the directions it had said we could eat vegetables and nuts except for onions and garlic…All in all the food was good and not unlike the food we ate daily in a small village in south India.
I also very much enjoyed the yoga and pranayama practices.  The heavy emphasis on twists was quite unlike my normal yoga practice and though I was sore the first few days it has been invigorating.

I also continued to drink tea, a prohibited beverage.  But it is herbal and many other herbal teas contain not only caffeine but other bioactive compounds.  Despite these modifications, I found the cleansing program worthwhile.  The general diet is not too unlike much of the food I normally eat except for the omission of wheat and milk products.

Thank you again for putting the program together.

Thank you so much for such an informative cleansing week. My husband & I actually enjoyed the bland kitchari and the detox teas. We both noticed a great reduction in our arthritic aches and pains . ( we are 68 & 69).
I thoroughly enjoyed the yoga , pranayama and meditation practices. A big thank you for all the very informative Resource material.
Thank you to all the people who contributed to  making this Cleansing program.

Well,  I am absolutely delighted with a result I did not expect and welcome heartily.  My constant arthritis knee pain mostly disappeared on day 4 of the cleanse. It has not yet returned, and I willstay on this diet and  very slowly add back in eggs, wheat, dairy, one a week,  and see which is the culprit.  Many many thanks for the lovely videos, so instructive.  Having been in yoga since 1968, I have learned that whatever I think I know, can be refined and broadened with every new teacher. Many thanks, God Bless.   Lolly
