Doctors

Carrie E. Demers, M.D.
Board-certified in internal medicine, Dr. Demers is a holistic physician who blends modern medicine with traditional approaches to health. After receiving her medical degree from the University of Cincinnati and completing her residency at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago, Dr. Demers went on to study massage, homeopathy, nutrition, herbal medicine and Ayurveda. She is on the faculty of the Himalayan Institute, and is Medical Director of the Institute’s Total Health Center. Dr. Demers has been interviewed by numerous newspaper, magazine, and book editors regarding her holistic approach to health, and has been quoted in Time Magazine. She has written articles for Yoga International and other magazines, and lectures nationally on Ayurveda and holistic health.

Michelle Head, DC
A chiropractor and certified applied kinesiologist with a private practice at the Himalayan Institute Total Health Center, Dr. Head has a holistic philosophy of health care.  She evaluates the structural, chemical, and mental aspects of health utilizing manual muscle testing. She earned her Doctor of Chiropractic degree with Summa Cum Laude honors from Palmer College in Davenport, Iowa, a BA in natural sciences and a BM in piano performance from Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin.  Dr. Head lectures on stress management, workplace ergonomics, and headache prevention.

Therapists

Mary Cardinal
A yoga teacher, yoga therapist, and educator, she has studied yoga and yoga therapy for 11 years.  Ms. Cardinal serves as a yoga therapist for the Himalayan Institute Total Health Center at the Himalayan Institute’s international headquarters in Honesdale, Pennsylvania. She also holds degrees and certification in both traditional and Montessori education.

Larry Gerhardt, RN, BSN
Larry Gerhardt received his Bachelor of Science of Nursing from the University of Minnesota in 1985, specializing in post-surgical and geriatric nursing.  He is currently practicing as a registered nurse in long term care in Scranton, Pennsylvania.  A certified biofeedback therapist through the Biofeedback Institute of America, he has been working in this capacity at the Himalayan Institute Total Health Center in Honesdale, PA, since 1992.

Nema Nyar, MST
A graduate of the Santa Fe School of Massage (formerly the Dr. Jay Scherer’s Academy of Natural Healing) Ms. Nyar has been practicing massage continuously for over 20 years. She is trained in Swedish Massage, Myopathic Muscular Therapy, Shiatsu, and Jin Shin Jyutsu. She often uses energy work in conjunction with deep physical work, and has the ability to find and address causative factors of pain in the body.

New Staff

Shane Bradley, M.D.
Dr. Bradley is a Board Certified Psychiatrist and Child/Adolescent Psychiatrist who integrates contemporary western psychiatry and psychology with traditional medicine. He received a masters degree in counseling psychology and a doctorate in medicine, both with high honors, from the University of Missouri-Columbia. Dr. Bradley completed his residency in psychiatry and a fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at the University of Missouri- Columbia. He has received numerous awards in his field for excellence in scholarship and psychotherapy, and has published original scholarly research, essays, and poetry. Dr. Bradley has been a serious student of Yoga, Zen, Ayurveda, and Eastern Orthodox Christianity for many years.

Kristen Daniels, PA-C, MS-PAS
Kristen Daniels completed her medical training at DeSales University Physician Assistant Program in Lehigh Valley, PA. Kristen began studying at the Himalayan Institute in 2004, and attended the teacher’s training program in 2010. With a deep interest in holistic and Ayurvedic medicine, she has been apprenticing Dr Carrie Demers throughout her time at the Himalayan Institute’s headquarters. After several years in emergency medicine, Kristen has joined the staff at the Total Health Center and is dedicated to bridging the worlds of Eastern and Western medicine. She strongly believes that wellness can be achieved by honoring and supporting our body’s innate ability to heal.
Everett Sharp, LMT
Everett has a history in dance, performance, and film production that is balanced with emergency medical certifications, private sector home health care, FEMA disaster-site massage certification, and a four-year position at the Haight-Ashbury Free Clinic in San Francisco as a Medical Assistant, Phlebotomist, and HIV test councilor.  Everett graduated from the Port Townsend School of Therapeutic Massage in 2005.

Everett is a deep tissue/ injury treatment specialist.  He has a compassionate yet assertive approach, with a direct, anatomy-driven style of massage that is intended to create healing change in soft tissue.  In addition to traditional table bodywork, Everett offers the medically-based Southern Style Thai Yoga Massage.  With experience in a variety of massage modalities and health care settings he is comfortable working with specialized clientele at all ages and ranges of wellness and recovery.

Michelle Sharp, LMT
Michelle’s style is restorative with an intention to rejuvenate and balance systems.  Her massage work focuses on the relationship between muscle tissue and the nervous system.  Treatments are described as nurturing and unwinding.

After an Ayurvedic Bodywork internship at the Himalayan Institute’s Center for Health and Healing in 1999, Michelle continued her studies and received a Bachelor of Science degree from the Evergreen State College in 2004.  Her massage training began in 1996 and includes: manual lymphatic therapy, myo-fascial release, Ayurveda, Somatic Unwinding, Thai Yoga, Tui-Na, Reike, and cupping therapy, as well as pre and post surgery treatment.  Michelle is a certified yoga instructor and a regular teacher at HI.  She is passionate about self-care and power of personal practice.  She is experienced in working with chronic health issues and complex medical conditions.
