What is included in the price of accommodations?

Accommodations include vegetarian meals, hatha yoga classes, and full use of guest facilities.

Where are you located?

Our headquarters are located in northeastern Pennsylvania. The Himalayan International Institute of Yoga Science and Philosophy of the USA® is situated in a serene wooded setting on a 400-acre campus near Honesdale in the beautiful Pocono Mountains of northeastern Pennsylvania. Directions are posted here or can be obtained through Google Maps or similar services.

I’m new to yoga. Are any of your seminars appropriate for me?

Many of our seminars are appropriate for the beginner who’s interested in finding out about yoga as well as for the more experienced yoga practitioner who would like to enrich and inspire their yoga practices. For details on seminars, see our calendar.

When are your seminars held?

Our seminars are generally held on weekends. They begin Friday evening and end with Sunday lunch. You may arrive anytime after 2:00 p.m. on Friday; check-out is 2:00 p.m. Sunday. See our calendar for seminars and additional details.

What are your rooms like? Do they have a private bathroom?

Our typical guest rooms are simply furnished with two twin beds, sink, desk, closet, and medicine cabinet. Toilets and showers are down the hall. We have a few rooms available with a private bathroom for an extra charge.

Is it possible to stay for an extra day or two before or after a seminar?

Yes, the extra days would be your own private retreat rather than a structured program. The cost would be that of accommodations which include a private room, three vegetarian meals a day, and hatha yoga classes daily at 6:30 a.m. and Monday through Friday at 5 p.m.

Can I bring my young children along?

The Institute’s programs are designed for adults, and our guests generally are looking for an atmosphere conducive to a quiet retreat. However, we do have a limited number of spaces in our Guest House (located on our campus outside the main building) which can accommodate families. Call (800) 822-4547 for availability and charges. Please note that the Institute does not provide childcare.

Can I bring my pet(s)?

The Institute does not have the facilities to care for your pet, but click here for a list of nearby kennels.

What credit cards do you accept?

We accept Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express.

Is there a “required” mantra for this practice, or will any mantra do?

If you have started a special practice, such as Gayatri, Maha Mrityunjaya, or Navarna Mantra, this is the perfect place and time to take your practice to the next level. Otherwise an initiation mantra or breath meditation, like So-Ham, is fine.

When is the year-long group meditation?

November 11,2011 – November 11, 2012

How can one best participate from a distance?

Please see our “How to Participate” page for details.

What style of yoga do you teach?

The Himalayan Institute tradition is rooted in raja yoga. Raja yoga (often called ashtanga or the royal path) incorporates eight separate steps into its practice. The first two steps are the yamas and niyamas (moral restraints and constructive observances). Asanas (postures) and pranayama (breathing exercises) are the third and fourth rungs on the ladder of raja yoga. Pratyahara (sense withdrawal) and dharana (concentration) are the fifth and sixth steps in this path. The final two steps are dhyana (meditation) and samadhi (higher consciousness.) Raja yoga is the understanding, control, and mastery of your mind. It is a science and a way of life, not a religion.

Namaste ! I m really willing to learn yoga in your class but I live in Chicago so can you let me know if you have any location here that I can go and study overthere please
    Thank you

  • Iko

Does the tuition for the self-transformation program include a private room and private bathroom? If not, are these options available for an extra cost, and if so how much?

  • Cindy

I live locally, 1/2 hour drive away. I am interested in overall better health and well-being from a beginners standpoint. Some weekend workshops look interesting but I cannot commit to a 6 am to 10 pm 3 days in a row. Examples that interest me are “Spring Renewal” and “Vibrant Aging”. Is there some way that I could commit to a weekly or bi-weekly session(s) to lead me to better health and well-being that is not just yoga? Perhaps you have other suggestions for me?

  • vjrama

Dear Sir , supposing we take a Raja yoga spiritual meditation from the institute, is there any guidance from the Guru to check the students for their progress. is there any individual guidance is available at the institute or by online. is it possible to contact someone personally in that direction

Do you have to attend a weekend seminar Fri thru Sun; can you just attend Saturday? If so; can you drop in without reservations with a Premium Membership? Thank you.

    • http://himalayaninstitute.org The Himalayan Institute

Because our seminars are designed in a linear fashion we recommend that you take a seminar in full. But if for some reason you would be able to understand that you will not be receiving a complete experience, you could register for the seminar and only attend the sessions that you can.

  • nancy

Absolutely, meals can be purchased at our reception desk. Breakfast and Dinner are $4 and Lunch is $8.
