Choose Our Fall Cover!

By Yoga International Staff

We’d love to get your feedback on what cover we should use for the fall issue of Yoga International. You can help us out by taking a brief survey—we promise it’ll only take a minute!

The Himalayan Institute produces Yoga International?

  • Yoga101

I am sad that YI is going the way of Yoga Journal with primarily women doing an asana that most average bodies can not do. Your covers used to be beautiful.

Oh dear. I really don’t think we’re moving in that direction and I’m sad that you think so. Giselle Mari is a strong Jivamukti yoga teacher and practitioner who, at 41 years old, really embraces the true teachings of yoga. We would NEVER put a model on the cover and try to choose poses, like Bharadvajasana (seated twist) that we can all at least aspire to…or in my case modify! Thanks for taking the time to voice your concerns.

yet again it’s a female cover, how many of the last 50 issues have had a male on the cover? I asked the question why the ratio to men in a class is less than 20% to women and some of the answers was the feeling of it being a female thing or that they feel intimidated by the amount of women. Having women constantly on the covers of yoga magazines does nothing to help this balance and help male practitioners. It also means that newsagents display yoga magazines in the Women’s sections of their shelves. I know a lot of what is inside the issues are multigenda but please, redress the balance for the covers. All we’ll have in a few years will be female teachers, there needs to be a balance. We’ll need to start a Male Yoga Rights Movement soon if we’re not careful :o)

Oh I know, it is frustrating. The last time we had a male on the cover was Tommy Rosen and it was the Winter issue this past year. Unfortunately, and I have no idea why this is, men on yoga magazines don’t sell on the newsstand. I really wish they would because I loved the Tommy cover and there are obviously wonderful male teachers and practitioners we would love to honor. We will continue to test those covers in hopes prevailing purchasing wisdom changes. In the meantime, we are very committed to giving all of our readers information they can use to deepen their practice. When you start your men’s movement, make sure to give us lots of article suggestions! thanks again for weighing in. I so appreciate the feedback.
